Musical Theatre, World Religions and more: Lifelong topics

Lifelong registration copyClasses for Stetson University’s Lifelong Learning program in DeLand will begin Tuesday, Feb. 10. An open house is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 6, 10 a.m. to noon, in room 104, Flagler Hall, 434 N. Woodland Blvd., on Stetson’s DeLand campus.

Stetson’s Lifelong Program offers programs and learning opportunities for mature adults who want to continue to expand their horizons, seek knowledge for its own sake and have zest for getting out in the world and exploring all of the adventures that life has to offer.

Courses offered this term in DeLand include the following:

  • Florida Soup: Putting History On the Table

One part history, one part stories, one part photography: combine all into a compelling look at historic cooking habits, food production and recipes that defined the family and community in rural and small-town Florida.

  • A Look at the Future of Warfare

The journey of warfare through our history has been a dark and somewhat cultural phenomenon. But what direction will war take in the future?  Where might they occur and what might they look like?

  • How to Take and Edit Better Nature Photographs

The first class focuses on the basics: camera operation and photographic techniques. The second class is a photo field trip on the St. Johns River aboard the motor vessel Naiad. The final class focuses on editing using Windows Live Photo Gallery.

  • John B. Stetson: Hat Manufacturer and University Builder

The son of a hat maker, John B. Stetson visited Central Florida in the early 1880s. Explore his legacy through his namesake university, as revealed through stories and photographs of his contributions to manufacturing, education, and architecture.

  • A Look at the World Around Us

Three areas in the world have a significant impact on our world today. Come with us as we explore India and Pakistan, North Korea and Central and South America and their impact on world events, government, religion, culture, economy and military issues.

  • History of the American Musical Theater

How did we get from George M. Cohan and Irving Berlin to Bernstein and Sondheim? How did the American musical theater develop and make the Great American Song Book possible? Live performances included!

  • World Religions—A Different Perspective

Explore the world’s religions, ancient to modern, East and West, with a psychologist who studied belief systems in religion and cults for 60 years. The course explores and explains the psychology and spirituality of religions.

  • Why WWII Tuskegee Pilots Changed Civil Rights for African Americans and Others

How did the Tuskegee Pilots help win the war, influence government policies, and provide a natural intersection of race, intelligence, and personal achievement in the academic and military realm?

  • Stetson University: Architecture and History that Surprise

Explore Stetson’s picturesque Victorian, revival, modern, and post-modern architecture. Understand the traditions behind the naming of the campus buildings, meet the personalities that moved it forward, probe lost landmarks, a presidential scandal, and deconstruct a Stetson ghost story.

Open to the public, the program in Celebration launches on Feb. 4 (2 – 3:15 p.m.) at the Celebration Center with a special guest lecture by Tracey Conner and MicheLee Puppets entitled Empowering Lives Through the Art of Puppetry. Stetson’s Celebration Center is located at 800 Celebration Ave., Suite #104, Celebration, Fla., near Disney World. The first Lifelong course in Celebration begins Feb. 10.
