Professionalism and Networking in the Halls

A New Twist on Programming for Upperclassmen.

WineandCheeseNight5[2]Stetson’s Department of Housing and Residential Life partnered with the Office of Professional Development on Nov. 18, to bring several employers and career services professionals into the University Village Apartments to discuss topics that will affect students as they prepare to graduate.

These topics included: how to start conversations with potential employers; how to handle alcoholic beverages being served in the professional setting; and how to maintain professionalism both inside and outside of the office.

Students who attended the program shared that they had never experienced a program structured this way and that they appreciated the fact that actual employers (including some Stetson alumni) were invited to the apartments to showcase their skills and assist the attendees as they prepare for graduation.

In total, the program yielded about 40 students in attendance who networked with the employers for about an hour over wine and light refreshments and also participated in group discussions.

Overall, this program was a huge step in the right direction for programming efforts for our upperclassmen students as they learned skill sets not normally taught in the classroom but that are important to learn as they enter the professional realm.

What’s next for upperclassmen programming? You’ll have to stay tuned to your email and information from your RAs to find out!
