Candy Chemistry: The Sweet Side of Science

Sweet Side of ChemistryPaul Sibbald, assistant professor of chemistry, will open the fall series of the Gillespie Museum’s Science Café programs–and Halloween Week–with a discussion of the chemistry of candy and confections. This event, Thursday, Oct. 23, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m., is part of National Chemistry Week (Oct. 19-25) and co-sponsored by the Orlando Section of the American Chemical Society. Science Cafés help to promote scientific literacy by encouraging relaxed, open conversations among scientists and nonscientists of all ages. “For these evenings, we take full advantage of the warmth and charm of the Gillespie Museum, offering light refreshments, informal seating, and an evening of thoughtful conversation,” says Museum Director, Karen Cole. “This time we’ll have plenty of candy—to eat and to study.” The event, free and open to the public, is also offered as a cultural credit opportunity for Stetson undergraduates. The next Science Café (Thursday, Nov. 13, 7:00-8:30 p.m.) will feature Katrina Locke, natural resources director, Environmental Management Division. She will discuss Volusia County’s sustainability initiative and the Green Volusia program. The Gillespie Museum is located at 234 East Michigan Avenue, on the southeast corner of Stetson’s DeLand campus.
