Mezzo-soprano performs senior recital March 22

Mallory-MusicStetson University mezzo-soprano Mallory Sekel will perform her senior recital on Saturday, March 22, at 5:30 p.m. in Lee Chapel, inside Elizabeth Hall, 421 N. Woodland Blvd., on Stetson’s DeLand campus. All are invited to attend.

Sekel has distinguished herself as winner of Stetson University’s prestigious H.M Giffin Vocal Competition in 2013, a regional winner of the Southeastern National Association of Teachers of Music auditions in 2011 and a winner of the Wednesday Music Club of Central Florida in 2012.

As a member of the Stetson Opera Theatre, she performed the role of Ježibaba in Dvořák’s Rusalka in February 2013, and has been a featured soloist with the Stetson Women’s Chorale, Stetson Concert Choir and Choral Union.

Performing regularly throughout Florida, Sekel has sung as the alto soloist in Handel’s Messiah with the Brevard Community Chorus in Melbourne. In addition, she has collaborated with members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in the Caribbean. Recently, Sekel was “Highly Commended” in the 2013 Stetson University Concerto Competition. She has also received local scholarships from the Rotary Club, American Business Women’s Association, Homestead Center for the Arts and Soroptimist International of Homestead.

Sekel is earning a bachelor of music degree with an outside field of business as a scholarship vocal student of Stetson Professor Jane Christeson. Upon graduation in May 2014, she will pursue her M.B.A.

Her recital will include works by Samuel Barber, Fernando Obradors, Ottorino Respighi and the complete Wesendonck Lieder by Richard Wagner. Sekel will collaborate with Tammy Miller, piano, adjunct music professor at Stetson, and alumna.
