UPS scholarship awarded to Stetson junior

Kou Sua-2Kou Sua, a junior at Stetson University, has been selected to receive a $2,400 UPS Scholarship provided through the Florida Independent College Fund.

Sua is from Cape Coral, Fla., and a 2011 graduate of Cape Coral High School. She is majoring in Spanish with a minor in philosophy, is a member of Stetson’s Bonner program and serves as a special representative who travels to other colleges/universities with Bonner programs to share ways to enhance their programs. Sua tutors kindergarten and first grade ESOL students at Starke Elementary School in DeLand, Fla., in various course subjects.

“I got an email from financial aid congratulating me on being nominated and for receiving the scholarship,” said Sua in a recent interview. “I was definitely excited because it meant that I no longer needed an unsubsidized loan.”

The Florida Independent College Fund is a statewide association for private colleges and universities that is affiliated with the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC). At the national level, CIC teams up with the UPS Foundation to distribute funding of the UPS Scholarship. This year, CIC awarded nearly $1.5 million in scholarships from its UPS Educational Endowment Fund to private institutions of higher learning across the nation, including a grant of $74,400 to the Florida Independent College Fund. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of the students’ academic achievement and financial need.

“Kou was nominated for her achievements and contributions to the Stetson community both in and out of the classroom,” stated Rosalie Carpenter, dean of Students. “Kou has a strong GPA and is an avid volunteer on our campus and in our community. She exudes such joy when talking about her volunteer work with kindergarteners at Starke Elementary. Kou is a role model, mentor and embodies a true Hatter. I was honored to nominate her for this award.”

“Through this national scholarship program, CIC and UPS are delighted to make it possible for 609 deserving young men and women to attend the private college or university of their choice,” said Richard Ekman, president of CIC. “By directly assisting students with significant financial need, CIC and UPS are helping a new generation of students achieve their dreams of a college education.”

“UPS is proud to continue that spirit of giving by partnering with CIC to support thousands of students working to become the leaders of tomorrow by obtaining an education from our nation’s independent colleges,” said Eduardo Martinez, president of The UPS Foundation. “We are proud, too, that The UPS Foundation and UPS employees directed $97.5 million in philanthropy and in-kind services, including more than 1.8 million hours of volunteer service, to local communities around the world.”

The Council of Independent Colleges is an association of 645 nonprofit independent colleges and universities and more than 90 higher education organizations that has worked since 1956 to support college and university leadership, advance institutional excellence, and enhance public understanding of private higher education’s contributions to society. CIC is the major national organization that focuses on providing services to leaders of independent colleges and universities as well as conferences, seminars, and other programs that help institutions to improve the quality of education, administrative and financial performance, and institutional visibility. CIC also provides support to state fundraising associations that organize programs and generate contributions for private colleges and universities. The Council is headquartered at One Dupont Circle in Washington, DC. For more information, visit www.cic.edu.
