Higher education leader D. Parker Young, Ph.D., has been selected as the recipient of this year’s Facilitator Award, presented during Stetson University’s 34th Annual National Conference on Law and Higher Education, Feb. 14-20, in Orlando, Fla.

The award recognizes educators who embody the values and principles articulated by Stetson University College of Law professors Peter Lake and Robert Bickel in their book, The Rights and Responsibilities of the Modern University. The Facilitator Model urges educators to be proactive about safety and risk-management and to develop organization environments that are reasonably safe, educationally relevant and developmentally sound.

Young is Professor Emeritus of Higher Education at the Institute of Higher Education, University of Georgia. He has taught courses on law and higher education at the University of Georgia since 1968, where he has been cited for excellence as a teacher.

The National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) honored Young with the Outstanding Contribution to Literature or Research Award and named him a “Pillar of the Profession.” The Association for Student Judicial Affairs created the D. Parker Young Award in his honor to recognize an individual’s outstanding scholarly contributions in the area of higher education law and judicial affairs. The Education Law Association has given its highest award, The McGhehey Award, to Young for outstanding service to the association and for national leadership in the field of education law.

Young is past president and a member of the board of directors of the National Organization on Legal Problems of Education. He is serving his second term on the Erskine College board of trustees and has served on the board of the American Association of University Administrators and Pfeiffer University.

The author of numerous books, including The Yearbook of Higher Education Law, Young is a contributing and consulting editor for publications including The College Student and the Courts and The College Administrator and the Courts.

Stetson’s weeklong National Conference on Law and Higher Education will include sessions with national legal and higher education experts about helping students to thrive in college, achieving drug free schools, compliance with Title IX and college safety.
