Fall break signals the time for a brief respite after mid-term exams. But, with Homecoming 2012 right around the corner, one has to realize that rest is way overrated! Once classes resume Monday morning, the Stetson community will be humming with many things to do, including public lectures, discussion opportunities, musical concerts, Hatter sports, Greenfeather Week and much, much more. Here’s just a snapshot of calendar options, from Oct. 12-19:

Hatter Spirit: Sunday, Oct. 14—Cheer the Stetson Men’s Soccer Team against USC Upstate from 1-5 p.m., on the soccer field located behind the Athletic Training Facility. GoHatters.com 

Girl Power: N.O.W. will be hosting their second event in The F Word series and it will be a discussion on feminism in the Middle East. The event will focus on the current feminist movement in the Middle East, feminists from the Middle East, and the issue of the burqa/veil. Join the group for a deeper understanding of feminism on Monday, Oct. 15 from 7-8 p.m. in the Stetson Room.

Silence for the Silent: On Tuesday, Oct. 16 from midnight til noon, people all over the nation will stay silent in honor of the children who could not speak for themselves. Those participating in the pro-life event will have red arm bands and duct tape on their wrists as a sign that they are participating in the Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity. 

A Master Artist’s Talk: Stetson is pleased to welcome Emmy Award-winning graphic novelist Dean Haspiel to campus on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 7 p.m. in the Rinker Auditorium of the LBC. Students will have the opportunity to talk with Haspiel. A reception will follow in Sampson Hall. For more information, contact Dr. Rusty Witek at [email protected].

Music With a Cause: Come enjoy the Organ Musicale on Tuesday, Oct. 16 from 7:30-9 p.m. in Lee Chapel. Tickets are $8 each and all the money goes to benefit Sigma Alpha Iota.

I hear a Symphony! The Stetson Symphonic Band, Douglas Phillips, conductor, will perform Friday, Oct. 19, 7:30 p.m. in Lee Chapel.

Dare to be significant! On Tuesday, Oct. 16, 7:30-8:30 p.m. Habitat for Humanity will be holding their weekly meeting. From 8-9 p.m. Catholic Campus Ministry will meet in Allen Hall, room 103. And from 9:15-9:45 p.m. the Global Medical Brigades will meet in Sage 218. Learn how you can make a difference.

Presidential Debate Round 2: The Center for Community Engagement will be airing the 2012 election debates in Rinker Auditorium, inside LBC, on Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 9-10:30 p.m. Stetson faculty and staff will lead a healthy discussion following the debate. Come watch as the presidential candidates answer citizens’ questions and cover as many concerns as they can.

Market Day: Off to the market we go! On Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside merchants will be displaying their goods and services to the Stetson community. Come to the front of the CUB if you would like to take a look.

Europe is Calling: Every summer Stetson offers the Innsbruck program for students to study abroad in Austria. This Wednesday, Oct. 17, you are invited to come to an informational meeting from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the LBC room 123. The session is a great way to get more details on the program. An Afternoon of Opportunities: On Wednesday, Oct. 17 in the Hollis Center there will be an “Afternoon of Opportunities” for students. Graduate schools, organization representatives and employers will be on campus to offer information, network, and provide internship and employment opportunities for students and alumni. This event is open to ALL majors. Cultural credit will be given to Business majors only. 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Bienvenido Amigos: Color Between the Lines is sponsoring Noche Latina, which provides an opportunity for Latinos to have a voice on campus. Noche Latina is a literary art series where Stetson students, faculty and staff can present a literary art piece that expresses their background and their transition to Stetson. This is an opportunity to learn about the Hispanic heritage and raise awareness of racial issues related to the Latino population on campus. Come on Wednesday, Oct. 17 in the Coffee Shop from 6:30-8 p.m. for free Latino dishes, open-mic night, and show your support for Latinos at Stetson.

Listen Up Men: On Thursday, Oct. 18, Jackson Katz, author of The Macho Paradox: Sexual Violence and What Men Can Do About It, will be giving a lecture on his new book. His book covers a variety of male-related topics, and enlists the help of men to prevent men’s violence towards women. The lecture will be held in the Stetson Room and will run from 6:30-8 p.m.

Launch Reading: Immediately following the Katz lecture, DON’T GO ANYWHERE!  Beginning at 8 p.m., in the Stetson Room, English Professor Mark Powell will read from his third novel, soon-to-be-released, The Dark Corner.  And, afterwards you can head over to NightLights for Poetry at an Uncouth Hour at 9 p.m., where students are welcome to share their work in a supportive environment.

Mathlete: Never make fun of the Math Geeks- they’re here to help! Math tutoring is available for any math course up to and including Calculus III, in Elizabeth, room 209. The clinic includes help with any online technologies used in classes. Math tutoring is available to Hatter students, Sunday through Thursday, 7- 10 p.m., and Monday through Thursday from 2- 4 p.m.
