Earth Day Science Café: Water

Science Cafe-EarthDay“How Do We Meet Global Demands for Water?” is the central question posed by Harry Price, Ph.D., associate professor of chemistry, on Tuesday, April 22, 7-8:30 p.m., at Stetson’s Gillespie Museum. This event is co-sponsored by the Orlando Section of the American Chemical Society.

From safe drinking water to new methods in desalinization, topics in this conversation will address some of the ways chemistry has engaged with 21st-century global challenges.

“The availability of fresh water has become a pressing global concern because of unprecedented growth in the human population,” explains Price. While the supply is fixed, the demand for naturally recycled fresh water continues to grow. “The greatest challenge occurs in developing countries, which have the fewest natural and economic resources to meet it,” Price said.

An international movement, Science Cafés promote scientific literacy by encouraging relaxed, open conversations among scientists and nonscientists of all ages. “We’re honored to have the ACS as a partner,” says museum director Karen Cole, Ph.D. “We’ll turn the Gillespie Museum into a coffee house, offering light refreshments, informal seating, and an evening of thoughtful conversation. On Earth Day, Professor Price will challenge us to think–and to act.”
