SU Law plans international environmental conference

November 28, 2012

In coming weeks, Stetson University College of Law is organizing a premier annual competition for students around the world and a scholarly conference in Africa highlighting sensitive international environmental issues.

Stetson Law is organizing the International Environmental Moot Court Competition, now in its 17th year, with rounds in Africa, Australia, Brazil, India, Ireland, Korea and the U.S. The competition provides students around the world with an opportunity to tackle environmental issues impacting the planet.

This year, students from China, Nepal, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand have been invited to compete for the chance to advance to the international finals of the competition, held at Stetson Law in Tampa Bay, Fla., in March of 2013. Soongsil University’s College of Law in Seoul, South Korea, is presently hosting the first East Asian Rounds of Stetson’s International Environmental Moot Court Competition, Nov. 27-Dec. 1. Students prepare and present arguments that address peatland fires that create transboundary air pollution and threaten the existence of an endangered orangutan.

Stetson is spearheading the 14th International Wildlife Law Conference with the University of Buea in Cameroon, Africa, on Dec. 6-7. The conference brings together wildlife law experts from the governmental, NGO and academic fields to discuss the role of international agreements in conserving Africa’s wild fauna and flora. Stetson, the University of Buea, and the International Environmental Law Committee, American Branch of the International Law Association are co-sponsoring this year’s conference.

The West Africa Regional Round of Stetson’s International Environmental Moot Court Competition takes place Dec. 6-7 at the University of Buea, Cameroon, in conjunction with the conference.

Stetson’s Institute for Biodiversity Law and Policy regularly hosts international conferences and speakers, as well as the finals of the annual International Environmental Moot Court Competition, with preliminary competitions around the globe. Stetson has sponsored the International Wildlife Law Conference since 2007.
