Stetson University has been awarded a grant from the
National Science Foundation (NSF) to provide scholarships to students
wishing to major in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Physics. Each student award consists of a maximum of $39,000
payable over four years ($9,750 per academic year). Awards
also includes $1,000 per student in support of research/travel
expenses.
To
be eligible for an NSF award, a student must demonstrate both academic
merit and financial need. In order to demonstrate financial need,
you will need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA) as part of your application for the NSF award (details given
below). NSF awards are given on top of other forms of financial
aid received from Stetson and other sources. Consequently,
many of the NSF scholarship recipients will be able to attend
Stetson tuition free. Students receiving these awards are
expected
to maintain a minimum set of academic
standards in pursuit of their degree.
In order to qualify
and remain eligible for these prestigious scholarships, students must
- Be United States citizens,
nationals, refugee aliens, or permanent resident
aliens at the time of application,
- Enroll (and remain in enrolled) full time in Stetson's Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Physics degree
programs,
- Demonstrate academic potential or
ability (as evidenced by SAT scores, high-school
and/or transfer GPA, AP scores and IB status), and
- Demonstrate financial need as
defined by the US Department of Education rules for
need-based Federal financial aid
The following 3 items must be completed in order to be considered for an NSF Scholarship:
- APPLY TO STETSON: Apply for and be accepted for general admision to Stetson University by Feb. 15th, 2009. The full Stetson University
application procedures can be accessed online here.
- APPLY FOR THE NSF SCHOLARSHIP: Apply Online for an NSF application here.
- COMPLETE THE FAFSA: You must demonstrate financial need by completing the
FAFSA by Feb. 15th, 2009 (FAFSA application procedures can be accessed online here). When completing the FAFSA application, make sure to have the results submitted to Stetson
University; you will be eligible for NSF funds if there is any unmet need
remaining after the 'FAFSA - estimated family contribution' and your total financial awards
have been applied to your Stetson cost of attendance.
The NSF Scholarship Committee will begin making award decisions on March 15, 2009 for students
enrolling Fall 2009. Stetson University affirms the values and goals
of diversity and strongly encourages applications from groups
historically underrepresented in higher education.
