Parents of Internationals

Parents are a vital aspect of the entire international experience. As your student travels to Stetson University to participate in a life-changing experience that will increase the value of their education, allow them to experience a different culture, and expand their knowledge, they will need the invaluable parental support in their experience.

You can be involved in many different ways:

Academics
Logistics
Accommodations
Finances
Issues of communication
Complicated situations
Health

Check with your students to see what classes they are interested in taking and how it will benefit them in pursuit of their academic or personal goals. Review paperwork, registration, applications with your student and reassure them as they begin the process. Ask your student about their accommodations and try to foresee any differences that they might experience. Work with your student in finances to ensure that they understand the costs and how to budget. Consult your student on when an appropriate and reasonable time is so you can keep in touch on a regular basis and be there for your student in complicated situations or health concerns.

Above all, remember that this is an exciting experience for your student and encourage them to take charge, practice their leadership role, and be responsible in their international education.

The Parent/Family's Role

Parents form an integral part of the international experience by supporting their student's choice to embark on this academic and life-enriching endeavor. Here are some specific ways to show support and be involved in the process:

Make sure your student's visa, passport and immigration paperwork is in order.
Assist with flight arrangements.
Develop a plan for handling family emergencies that may arise while your student is abroad.
Create regular "catch-up" times with your student to stay connected.

Besides reading through our website in its entirety, ask your student to review materials which are available to them via our on-line system. While Stetson cannot grant you access, many of the items can be printed out by students, so be sure you stay up-to-date with your student and the process.
