Parents of International Students

Parents are a vital aspect of the entire international experience. As your student travels to Stetson University to participate in a life-changing experience that will increase the value of their education, allow them to experience a different culture and expand their knowledge, they will need your invaluable support in their experience.

You can be involved in many different ways:

  • Academics
  • Accommodations
  • Finances
  • Health
  • Issues of communication
  • Logistics
  • Other complicated situations

Check with your student to see which classes they are interested in taking, and how those classes will benefit them in pursuit of their academic or personal goals. Review paperwork, registration and applications with your student and reassure them as they begin the process. Ask your student about their accommodations and try to foresee any difficulties that they might experience. Work with your student ensure that they understand the costs of their education and how to budget accordingly. Consult your student on an appropriate and reasonable time that will allow you to keep in touch on a regular basis. And finally, be there for your student in complicated situations or health concerns, no matter what they are.

Above all, remember that this is an exciting experience for your student. Encourage them to take charge, practice their leadership skills and be responsible in their international education.

The Role of Parents and Family

Parents form an integral part of the international experience by supporting their student's choice to embark on this academic and life-enriching endeavor. Here are some specific ways to show support and be involved in the process:

  • Assist with flight arrangements.
  • Create regular "catch-up" times with your student to stay connected.
  • Develop a plan for handling family emergencies that may arise while your student is abroad.
  • Make sure your student's visa, passport and immigration paperwork is in order.

Besides reading through our website in its entirety, ask your student to review materials which are available to them via our online systems. While Stetson University cannot grant you access to these systems, students can print many of the materials available on them. Be sure you stay up-to-date with your student and the process!
