Life in Deland
We are delighted that you are interested in studying with us here in DeLand! Studying in another country is one of the most exciting and rewarding opportunities available to you as part of your academic career. Your time at Stetson will be not only a journey of new worlds and cultures, but also a journey of self-exploration and self-discovery. The time you spend abroad will help define who you are as an individual, and we want to ensure that you get the most out of your experience during your time in DeLand.
In order to make this happen, it's important for you to consider all the factors and logistics that studying abroad can entail, as well as the physical and emotional aspects involved. Planning your study abroad is a thrilling experience as you look forward to future endeavors; however, it is important that you are prepared. Please take a moment and carefully review the travel and safety details we have provided to help you along the way, as well as information on what to do once you get here:
Estimated Annual Personal Expenses
Stetson estimates that an exchange student should expect to spend at least $1500 for personal expenses and $1200 for books, study materials and supplies during an exchange year of two semesters at Stetson.
Additional funds will be required to travel around the United States during vacation periods. Students are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week (at approximately $7-8 per hour) on campus during the exchange period; through this employment is not guaranteed and should not be assumed will occur.
Preparing a Budget
- For students paying their accommodations directly at SU, we recommend at least $1,000 in U.S. dollar traveler's checks, as they can be replaced if lost or stolen and can be used immediately upon arrival to pay for housing, food, and personal expenses. The remainder of funds should be brought in a bank draft or check payable to yourself. This bank draft can be deposited when opening a bank account in DeLand.
- Note that funds cannot be withdrawn from a new account made with a bank draft for two to four weeks.
- You will be able to choose a savings or checking account and get an ATM (automated teller machine) withdrawal card.
Planning for Meals at Stetson
Living on campus you can purchase a meal plan, as room and board are consolidated on one contract. The meal plan options are located here. The main cafeteria is located in the CUB (Carlton Union Building) in the center of campus. You can also use your meals in the Coffee Shop, and the Hat Rack that includes Einstein's Bagels and Newton's Grill. We also have the C-Store to buy meals to preheat, but those do not count as meals.
Planning your Wardrobe
Plan on wearing very light clothing upon arrival in Florida during August. The summer daily temperature is usually between 80 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit (27-38 Celsius). Most students wear shorts, t-shirts, sandals, and sunglasses during the hot days. Good walking shoes are always recommended because of Stetson's pedestrian campus.
The autumn months are warm, but cooler in October and November. December through March is colder and you will need warm clothing (sweaters, coats, etc.) The lowest temperatures DeLand experiences can reach the 30's (Fahrenheit, around -1 degrees Celsius) but temperatures generally stay 50-65 degrees Fahrenheit (10-18 Celsius) which for most people is a medium weight jacket and jeans. Most students and townies wear flip-flops year-round though.
It warms up again in the spring months, reaching 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 Celsius) by April.
Sending Mail/Packages/Luggage
After you rent a post office box, you can receive mail in your own name. For delivery of large packages or luggage you wish to ship in advance, use our street address. Students usually carry all the luggage they need and buy items here as needed.
Travel Around the U.S. During Your Breaks
Go for it! Florida is on the East side of the United States, so students often travel to the up or down the coastline during breaks. Students frequently enjoy the beaches all along Florida or even go up North to sight-see. Some students even return home during the holidays. Students often stay with roommates or friends over holidays as well.
Working in Florida During your Stay
You are permitted to work on the SU campus during your stay at SU. Campus jobs include office and cafeteria work; sometimes even a bit of tutoring! Office jobs typically require typing which you can learn here at SU during your stay! Interested students should visit the Human Resources in Elizabeth Hall. Campus jobs pay about $7.35 per hour, and you are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week.
Safety in U.S. and DeLand
Studying abroad can be a fun and safe experience, but it is important to realize that you are subject to the laws and customs of another country.
Although most trips abroad are trouble free, being prepared will help one avoid the possibility of serious trouble. Become familiar with the basic laws and customs of the United States before you travel. Remember: Reckless behavior while in the United States can do more than ruin your experience, it can land you in jail! To have a safe trip, avoid risky behavior and plan ahead.
In addition to the information we make available to you in our on-line system after admittance, it is critical that you arrive in DeLand to attend our Orientation. Attendance is mandatory and will ensure you have information on the U.S., SU, and DeLand--all to keep you safe, as well as aid in your transition to our campus.
