STETSON UNIVERSITY VALUES COUNCIL PROGRAMS

Stetson University Values Council 2010-2011

The Stetson University Values Council theme for the 2010-2011 academic year is "Change: What? Why? How?" Theme events are sponsored by the seven councils of the Values Counciland include guest lectures, book discussions and other venues. Guest speakers for 2010-2011 include Todd Peppers, an Associate Professor at Roanoke College and Lecturer at Washington and Lee University. Peppers has many publications relating to his experience as a law clerk including his book Anatomy of an Execution: The Life and Death of Douglas Christopher Thomas. Other guest speakers include Norma Ramos who is being co-sponsored by the Women and Gender Studies program and the Artists & Lecturers Committee. Ramos is an international activist for women's rights and is the Co-Executive Director of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women. She combines several approaches – feminism, a global human rights agenda, and ecofeminism – that fit with Stetson's value commitments.

Professors and academic programs are urged to partner with the Values Council to make theme events attractive and educational for students; and to encourage students to attend, and even lead, book discussions.

The seven individual values chairs for 2010-2011 are Professors Ramee Indralingam (Gender Equity), Dixon Sutherland (Ethical Decision-Making), Greg Sapp (Community Engagement),Anne Hallum (Environmental Responsibility), Michele Skelton (Health and Wellness), Jamil Khader and Kimberly Flint-Hamilton (Diversity), and Stetson Chaplain Michael Fronk (Religious and Spiritual Life).
