Stetson Parent Association
Greetings Stetson Parents!
As the president of the Stetson Parent Association (SPA) and the mother of Peter, a junior digital arts major, I want to welcome you to SPA.
Our family has had a tremendous experience with the Stetson community. Thanks to a personable, world-class faculty, a dedicated and caring administration and an inclusive community of students, Stetson University has become Peter's second home. As a family, we believe the decision Peter made to attend Stetson University has been one of the best decisions he has made. It is my sincere hope that you will find this very same connection to Stetson University.
As a result of your student enrolling at Stetson University, you are already a member of the Stetson Parent Association. As a member, you will receive our parent e-newsletters as well as invitations to special events and other important communications.
The SPA mission is "[to] engage parents and families in supporting the university's mission for each student's success." Therefore, we have established four committees in which you can volunteer your assistance:
- Parent Recruitment Team - SPA Vice President for Recruitment- Valentine Joseph (daughter Kimberly is a sophomore business administration major) lives in West Palm Beach and is the director of affiliate operations for the south Florida affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This committee works with the Office of Admission with recruitment efforts around the country and the world. This committee is about getting the word out about Stetson University.
- Parents Fund Committee - SPA Vice President for the Parents Fund- Jim Davis is the father of Peter Davis (junior). He graduated from Washington and Lee University with a B.A. and later from the University of Florida College of Law with a J.D. He is currently an attorney with Holland and Knight in Tampa. Since its founding in 1883, Stetson University has relied on parents, alumni and friends for support. The Parents Fund Committee assists the Office of University Relations with meeting the goals of the annual fund which supports Stetson University's most pressing annual needs.
- Parent Campus Life Committee - SPA Vice President for Campus Life- Ann Harrington, proud (mom) parent of Stetson University 2012 graduate - Mariamne M. Harrington, lives in Orlando, Florida and works for Orange County government as an administrative assistant for the Utilities Engineering Division. Ann grew up in Washington, D.C., lived in the Republic of Panama (where she learned Spanish), Cornish, New Hampshire, and then back to Washington, D.C. before moving permanently to Florida in 1987. Ann graduated from Balboa High School in the Canal Zone, attended Canal Zone College as well as Polk Community College and Valencia College. Ann has been involved in PTA organizations, SAC councils and Band Parent Organizations at the elementary, middle and high school levels prior to her involvement with the Stetson Parent Association. Her daughter, Amne, is pursuing her masters degree in Higher Education at the Bowling Green State University. This committee assists the Division of Campus Life and Student Success with on-campus events for parents. Events include Parents Orientation, Family and Friends Weekend, Hatter Saturday and other events in which parents are included.
- Parent Career Committee - SPA Vice President for Career Development - Eric Lopez (daughter Suzanne is a junior management and MIS double major) is a Stetson University alum ('83) and CPA. He currently works as a controller for the Hunter's Creek Community Association in Orlando. Parents who volunteer with the career committee are willing to help Stetson University students and alumni with career exploration and networking by offering internships, allowing a student to shadow them at work, assisting with job searches and career networking in their local community.
