Placement Exams

We offer online placement exams in Spanish and French. Current and returning students must take these in the Language Commons, 129 Sampson Hall. The Language Commons is open Mon. - Thu., 10am - 9pm, and Fri., 10am - 4pm during the semester. It is closed weekends and breaks. We also offer exams in German and Russian by special arrangement.

If you are continuing in the language you took in high school, you MUST take the placement test. The test will assess your language skills and will allow you to be placed in the appropriate level.

For the best assessment of your level, please do not consult any dictionary or use any other assistance in taking the test. Any supporting materials would only distort the diagnosis of your placement.

The test requires approximately 10 to 25 minutes. The number of questions is not fixed: in order to determine your ability, the exam will ask as many (or few) questions as necessary.

As soon as the exam is completed, you will see your results and they will be immediately transmitted to the Modern Languages Department. Print your results and keep a copy to show to your advisor.

If you never took a high school course in the language you intend to study at the university, then you do not have to take the placement test.

If you have any questions, please contact the Director of the Language Commons in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, Dr. Robert Watson, via email rwatson@stetson.edu or phone (386)822-7282.
