Hatter camper participates in the famous night session dunk contest |
A: Yes. Our camp is geared to all ages and skill levels. It will be a fun introduction to the game of basketball for any child who does not have an extensive background in the sport. We often find that campers who do not have much basketball experience get fired up about the sport, because they learn the basics in a fun and cooperative environment at camp.
Q: If I am an elite basketball player, will I still benefit from coming to the Stetson Basketball Camp?
A: Yes. We teach the same fundamentals and drills that we use to coach our Division I basketball team. Over the past several years, we have ended up recruiting about a dozen of our former campers to play basketball at Stetson. Competition is always at a high level at the camp, and some campers are even invited to play with the counselors to end the camp day.
Q: Who makes up the counseling staff?
A: Former and current Stetson players make up the bulk of the counselors. All four of the Stetson coaches are always on hand to help run camp and instruct the campers. Local high school and college coaches make up the rest of the staff.
Q: Where do the campers stay?
A: The campers stay in the Stetson University dormitories on campus. The specific dormitory depends on the week of attendance, but all dorms are within a 5 minute walk of the Edmunds Center.
Q: Can friends and siblings room together or next to each other in the dorms?
A: Every effort is made to honor roommate requests and big groups are generally put on the same hall. Roommates can be designated on the camp application. Typically, the dorm space allows for two campers per room.
Q: How are the dormitories supervised?
A: Our camp has an 8 to 1 camper to counselor ratio. All counselors stay in the dormitories and there is a minimum of 2 counselors staying on each hall with the campers. Every effort is made to break up halls according to age.
Q: Does my child need to bring money to camp?
A: All meals are provided for overnight campers and lunch is provided for day campers. We do have a camp bank where you can deposit money and purchase things such as pizza, candy or drinks throughout the week. The average bank deposit is between $25-$50 for the week.
Q: How is camp divided in terms of competition?
A: We generally have three different leagues of competition and instruction. Leagues are generally divided by ages, but exceptions can be made based on skill level or a desire to be in the same league as siblings or friends.
Q: Do you have anything in place for kids with special medical needs?
A: We have a full time trainer on staff, who is present at the camp at all times. Any medication or other medical needs can be handled by our trainer. Our trainer is at registration and special instructions can be given then.
Q: Are day campers required to attend the night sessions?
A: No, our night sessions do not involve league competition, but the night sessions are a lot of fun and day campers usually try to show up to them as much as possible. Night sessions begin at 7:30 pm and end at 9:00 pm. Please pick-up and drop-off all campers at the Edmunds Center.
Q: Besides the basketball essentials, what do I need to bring to camp?
A: There really are no other essentials that must be brought to camp, but many campers will bring T.V's or radiosto camp. The Stetson dormitories are wired for cable, so a T.V. and coaxial cable can be brought. At the same time, telephones will be available for use with a calling card.
Q: When do I receive specific information on the camp that I plan to attend?
A: Once your application is sent in, you will receive a camp packet giving all of the details of the week of camp you have chosen to attend. This information will include drop-off and pick-up times, a detailed schedule of the week and more details on what to bring to camp. You can also download the information on our website from the "camp packet" section.
