All bomb threats should be taken seriously and the following procedures should be followed.
A. Threat Received by Phone B. Threat Received by Mail or Suspicious Object Observed
A. Threat Received by Phone
- If threat is received by phone, try to get as much information as possible, including:
a. the exact time of the call b. the number of the phone on which you received the call c. the caller’s number if it is displayed d. any background noise on the call e. any observable voice characteristics of the caller f. when the bomb will explode, where the bomb is located, type of bomb, who placed the bomb, why the bomb was placed.
- If possible, notify someone in the room or immediate vicinity to call Public
Safety at 822-7300 while you are on the phone with the caller.
- Immediately after the caller has ended the call, notify Public Safety and
follow their directions.
- Do not make other calls in the area where the bomb is reported to be.
- Do not activate light switches or other electrical devices in the area where the bomb is reported to be.
- Do not evacuate the building unless instructed to do so by Public Safety or other law enforcement personnel.
- If instructed to evacuate the building, move a safe distance away from the building (at least 300 feet) and remain there until the all clear to return is given by Public Safety or the Emergency Management Team.
- If the threat was left on your voicemail, do not erase it.
B Threat Received by Mail or Suspicious Object Observed
- If you are holding an envelope or package and determine that it constitutes a threat, place it on the floor and immediately leave the area.
- If a suspicious object is discovered, do not attempt to touch or move the object. Immediately leave the area.
- Call Public Safety at 822-7300 and follow their instructions. Public Safety will be responsible for ordering the evacuation of the building.
- Stop anyone from entering the building or area where the threatening mail or suspicious object is located.
- Remain at a safe distance from the suspicious mail/object until the all clear to return is given by Public Safety
