All classes will be held in Sage Hall on the main campus of Stetson University in DeLand, FL.

DEL-BER   R.O.B.O.T.S. (Really Outstanding Bunches of Tin & Scraps) 

Are you an inventor at heart?  Do you enjoy creating new designs, using technology, creativity, and your imagination?  Do you like to “tinker”? If you answered, yes, then come join us as we explore the world of R.O.B.O.T.S.  You will journey through the history of time as robots have developed through the ages. 
Learn how these technological wonders have changed and improved our way of life. Come explore, design, invent, and build your very own, special, unique, BFR (Best Friend Robot).
(Grades K-2) Instructor:  Tara Ruyter

 

DEL-101  HEAD, SHOULDERS, KNEES and TOES

Welcome to the incredible, complex, highly sophisticated, awesome, audacious world of
the human body! Have you ever wondered what’s inside your skin? Why does your heart beat? 
How can you think? Why does blood flow all over your body? What holds your body up and gives it shape?
How do muscles help you move?....or simply…What’s so wonderful about our own bodies?  If you nodded yes to any of these questions…than you’re invited to come and spend a week with us to explore the most efficient, effective, machine known to exist…the human body! You’ll embark on a fantastic voyage and discover our anatomy from the inside out.
(Grades 3-5) Instructor:  Laurie Jackson

 

DEL-102   BLAST OFF!   ROCKET SCIENCE

Discover the fascinating world of rocketry this summer in an
action-packed, fun-filled, hands-on program. Using the scientific investigative process, we will explore rocketry and Newton's laws of motion. Be prepared to design and build your own balloon rockets, compressed air rockets, and water rockets. We'll top off the week by building and launching model rockets. And when your friends ask, you can tell them, "Yes, as a matter of fact, it is rocket science!"
(Grades 3-6)  Instructor:  Marty Ingoldsby

 

DEL-103  FLASH FICTION

This fiction writing seminar will explore the principles of good story telling, specific writing techniques including moment-by-moment narration, dialogue, and description. Students will get a chance to create and share short fiction, and to get feedback from both peers and the instructor who is the author of the book Writing Extraordinary Essays. The week will culminate with a finished novella that will be published.
(Grades 6-12)  Instructor:  David Finkle

 

DEL-104   FORENSIC SCIENCE - CSI: DELAND

What is Forensic Science?  What evidence does an investigator utilize to
solve a crime?  Come and explore the science behind Fingerprinting, Footwear Analysis, Handwriting Analysis, Hair and Fiber Analysis, Blood Spatter Analysis, Tool Mark Examination, Profiling and Crime Scene Processing. Join us for a spine-tingling week of Crime Scene Investigation.  Let’s crack the case and Help Arrest The Suspects!

DEL-BER   MAGIC TREE HOUSE ADVENTURES  

Grab your backpacks and notebooks and join us for a fun filled week as we climb into the mysterious tree house of Frog Creek, PA. We will be transported back in time with Jack and Annie as we explore the worlds of dinosaurs, knights and mummies! Don't let this be an ordinary old summer. Come and discover what life was like in the Cretaceous period, Middle Ages and Ancient Egypt!
(Grades K-2)  Instructor: Ursula De Witte-Vogt

DEL-201  DRAGONOLOGY

Do you believe in dragons? Are you ready to become a certified
drangonologist?  Then join us as we take flight to discover the history of dragons as we delve deep into the world of these magnificent creatures. Come explore this mystical world as we create our own dragons, prepare their food and create an exploration only your wildest imagination can conjure.  Do you have what it takes to become an expert on these legendary creatures of fantasy?
(Grades 3-6)  Instructor: Leanda McMurtry


DEL-201  COMIC STRIP STUDIO

Whether you're a skilled artist or a consummate doodler, you, too,
can become a cartoonist. All you need is your imagination. What's your favorite cartoon? Zits? Peanuts? Calvin and Hobbes? This course will introduce you to techniques used by professional cartoonists to bring characters and ideas to life on the Sunday comics' page. We'll supply the materials and instruction, you'll supply the imagination. Taught by the creator of the Mr. Fitz comic strip, you'll enjoy a unique opportunity to learn cartooning from a professional cartoonist.
(Grades 3-12)  Instructor: David Finkle

 

DEL-202  FUNCTIONS ARE EVERYWHERE

Look around you, functions are everywhere; regardless of their shape, functions make the world go round; explore the concept of functions and learn how technology can predict their behavior and help you arrive at solutions that work. Come join us on a journey of discovery! 
In a week jammed with activities, you will experience how technology and
its applications are used to solve a wide variety of day to day problems in the world around us.   You will use CBR sonic motion detectors (and helpful robot friends) to generate and collect data.   Learn to use the TI84 calculator to predict future trends and discover linear programming, graphing systems of inequalities, and a process used by manufacturers to determine how much product to make.  Learn the quadratic formula
song and how to use it to solve quadratic equations which happen to be just about everywhere in science and engineering; meet the infamous Mr. i,the imaginary unit that defines complex or imaginary numbers.   All of this and more awaits you in a week of math fun!   Let the exploration begin!!

DEL-203  BUSINESSENTREPRENEURS

Learn how to make money and then make $ work for you! Turn your dreams into reality by learning how to develop a product, create and run your own business, and manage the finances, and market your products. The activities are hands-on and project-based to help students develop the skills to become business and marketing leaders while maintaining strong ethical standards. The course will also cover personal finances and how to set and achieve goals. If you want to learn how to be successful, then this is the class for you! Future business owners of the world unite!
(Grades 6-12)  Instructor: Dan Hargrave

 

DEL-204  HARRY POTTER SCIENCE MAGIC

Hop on the Hogwarts Express! Have you ever thought about being a student at a school similar to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? Then come immerse yourself in the fictional world of Harry Potter. Discover the magic as we explore the world of the famous wizard in classes such as Arithmancy, Astronomy, Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Divination, Herbology, History of Magic, Potions, and Transfiguration. Once students are sorted into their houses they will work together on cooperative learning projects and experiments, as well as earning house points. Aspiring witches, wizards and warlocks welcome. Leave the Muggle world behind and meet me at Platform 9 3/4.
