The Gillespie Museum of Minerals is Stetson University's Earth science museum. Its collection of 20,000 mineral, rock, and fossil specimens--one of the oldest and largest in the southeastern US--has developed over the past fifty years into a center for environmental education. Exhibits and displays include geology, native Florida ecosystems and plant landscapes, minerals and mining, and fluorescent rocks. The Museum is sited in a Flordia native plant landscape and the adjacent Rinker Environmental Learning Center (RELC) provides opportunities for community gardening, environmental programming, and outdoor activities.

The RELC, which opened on Earth Day 2009, is Stetson University's newest green building. Constructed of local, recycled, and energy efficient materials, it also features a geo-thermal loop for heating and cooling, along with a rainwater collection system for its restroom facilities. Funded in partnership with the Marshall and Vera Lee Rinker Foundation and the Volusia County ECHO program, the Center offers a "smart" classroom and outdoor teaching areas for Stetson University academic programs, as well as for community and civic groups with a committed environmental mission. Contact the Gillespie Museum staff, gillespiemuseum@stetson.edu, for additional information about current programming or reservations.
