Rajni Shankar-Brown

Associate Professor of Education

Rajni Shankar-Brown, Ph.D., is an associate professor of education. She received her bachelor of arts degree in communication with emphases in interpersonal communication and international peace studies from George Mason University. Shankar-Brown earned her graduate degrees from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She holds a master's degree in teaching with a focus in middle grades education and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with specializations in urban education and literacy. She recently received the University of North Carolina at Wilmington's 2013 Inclusive Excellence Award for her teaching, service and scholarship efforts towards social equity. Through her research, scholarship and service, Shankar-Brown is committed to improving the educational experiences of students from socially marginalized groups, particularly children experiencing poverty and homelessness in the United States and overseas. Her research areas include culturally responsive pedagogy, middle level education, global teacher preparation, 21st century multi-literacies and arts integration.
