Mitzi Dykes is a hybrid: assembled in the U.S. with parts from Japan and Georgia. She’s a Stetson alum and believes her education helped propel her into a successful career and multiple leadership roles in the risk and insurance management industry.
For fifteen years, Mitzi managed corporate property and casualty risks for one of the nation’s largest human resources companies. During that time, she led projects that reduced injuries, legal claims and insurance premiums — saving the company millions. Professional communications were an integral part of her job: writing proposals, white papers and reports, as well as training employees, clients and industry professionals.
Leadership roles include serving as President, Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) of Central Florida; Education Chair, Chartered Property/Casualty Underwriters (CPCU) Society of Central Florida; and President, Independent Insurance Agents of Volusia/Flagler. In addition, Mitzi has presented at international conferences on the topics of workplace safety and implementing effective risk management programs.
Teaching has long been a passion for Mitzi for numerous reasons. First, she is acutely aware that good writing and speaking skills are essential to succeed. Second, she loves being a part of her students’ growth. And finally, having taught English in Japan for four years, she recognizes our students must be prepared to compete in a global market. In 1999, Mitzi started teaching part time at Stetson, as her risk management career allowed. In 2014, she joined the School of Business Administration as a full-time instructor.
