HELP "GREEN" STETSON
Mission: The mission of the Stetson University Environmental Responsibility Council (ERC) is to promote environmental responsibility throughout the institution, including its curricula, policies, operational practices, and external ties.
Introduction: In view of the unprecedented world environmental crisis, Stetson University has committed itself to incorporating principles of sustainable living on its campus. The goal is to function as a university in ways that will not compromise the lives of future human generations nor diminish the health of planetary ecosystems. As a responsible institution of higher learning, Stetson intends to advance the ecological literacy of the University community by modeling environmental stewardship in its physical plant and by embodying sustainability in its institutional operations. University President Doug Lee established the Environmental Responsibility Council (ERC) in 1998. The ERC includes participants from a broad spectrum of the Stetson community: staff, students, administrators and faculty. Our Board of Trustees unanimously agreed to have President Lee sign the Talloires Declaration and he did so on March, 2000, thus committing our university to a sustainable future. President Lee emphasized the University's commitment by signing the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment in 2007. Please contribute your ideas to the ERC by e-mailing its Chair, Dr. Anne Hallum, at ahallum@stetson.edu.
Guiding Principles: Stetson University adheres to Guiding Principles for Environmental Responsibility approved by the Board of Trustees in the 2002-2003 academic year, and continues to build on successful initiatives within each category: 1. Commitment to environmental education 2. Environmentally responsible purchasing 3. Efficient use and conservation of energy, water and other resources 4. The minimizing of solid waste production 5. The minimizing of hazardous materials on campus 6. Environmentally responsible campus design and planning principles centered on Florida native plants
