The Ethical Decision-Making General Education Requirement

To meet the General Education Requirements for the B.A. and B.S. Degreesa student must take one course in the area of Ethical Decision-Making. This requirement may be met by completing any course that has an “E” following the course number. The rationale for this requirement, as stated in the Bulletin, is as follows:

The Stetson community is founded on, and is sustained by, its strong commitment to high ethical standards. In classes and in our community life, generally, our constant aim is to promote an environment that acknowledges ethical responsibility and autonomy. We try to achieve this goal, not by advocating a particular agenda of substantive values, but by encouraging every member of the community to be open to rational discussion and debate concerning complex ethical issues. We believe that the strongest and healthiest community is not the one that speaks with one voice, but the one that acknowledges differences, and yet finds a way to achieve cooperation. Being a part of such a community helps us all to think through complex ethical issues. This, in turn, not only helps us formulate a rationale for the particular values that we embrace and stand ready to defend, but gives us, as well, a salutary respect for those whose values are different from our own.
