Program Website

The healthcare industry continues to grow on every level. Practitioners, researchers, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, sales representatives, and lifestyle counselors work together to help people live longer and healthier lives. If you are interested in exploring the anatomy and physiology of the human body and factors that play a role in medicine and disease prevention, check out Stetson's Integrative Health Sciences (IHS) program. This program integrates the sciences of biology, chemistry, and nutrition as they apply to the human body with unifying themes and issues within our own diverse healthcare system.

One of Stetson's fastest growing programs, IHS offers academic study in Health Science. Our program provides an integrative study of the human body by combining traditional classroom work with applied laboratory experiences. Our classes are designed to give you the knowledge and skills needed in healthcare careers. When you graduate, you will be familiar with blood pressure, EKG, metabolic cart, hydrostatic weigh, ophthalmoscope, stethoscope and other evaluative measures of health. Students are trained to provide leadership in the fields of preventive medicine, rehabilitative science, wellness and disease management.

Faculty

The IHS department includes faculty with expertise in anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology and nutrition. Students will have an opportunity to work closely with professors who conduct biochemical and physiological research, and who work with clients seeking lifestyle consultations. Faculty members and their areas of interest include:

  • Matthew Alan Schrager, Ph.D, University of Maryland; muscle physiology, aging and mobility disability
  • Michele S. Skelton, Ph.D, Auburn University; Hollis Chair of Health and Wellness: lactate studies, integrative medicine, healthcare ethics

Special Features

IHS has a distinctive approach to teaching health science. Classes include hands-on experience with the human body through laboratory experiences
and client interactions. A student's Senior Research Project is the paramount opportunity for a student to demonstrate leadership in the field of healthcare. Regardless of your area of interest in the diverse healthcare industry, you will have a place in the Integrative Health Science Department.

Course Information

IHS majors are required to take several natural science courses, including one or more courses in Biology, Physics, Anatomy and Physiology. The courses taken will be tailored to the student's individual needs for future career or educational goals. Within the department, students will take courses such as Health and Wellness, Nutrition, Healthcare ethics, Exercise Physiology, and Biomechanics. We also have several internship sites throughout the community available to expose students to possible fields of interest.
