How do gender and diversity affect the world we live in today? And why do men and women see the same things differently? By studying in Stetson University's Gender Studies Program, you will gain a better understanding of interconnections among gender, race, class and sexuality. Stetson's program examines all aspects of life "in the United States and around the globe" with the study of both women and men as we act out the gender roles assigned to us by society.Gender Studies helps provide a strong foundation for careers in fields such as law, education, business, public administration, public policy, government, medical and health professions, and social and community service. Our courses can also help prepare you for graduate programs in a wide range of disciplines.

Faculty

Faculty from all departments may teach in the Gender Studies Program. In addition to teaching, most of these faculty members have done research and community service relating to gender concerns.

  • Emily Mieras, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History and American Studies, College of William and Mary; Areas of study: Gender and women's history in the U. S., gender and social reform, popular culture and consumer culture.

Special Features

Stetson's commitment to small classes provides an ideal environment for classes dealing with gender concerns. The university's commitment to community service also makes it an ideal location for service learning available through the Gender Studies internship.

Course Information

In addition to gender-interest courses offered throughout the university, students minoring in Gender Studies take an introductory course, a junior-level colloquium, and a course in feminist philosophy or ethics.Gender Studies academic distinctives include:

  • Teaching apprenticeship opportunities,
  • Half-semester courses on film studies and social issues,
  • Capstone research seminar on gender theory.

Recent courses offered by the Gender Studies Program include Women and Art, Soul Food/Color Lines, Human Sexuality, Francophone Carribbean Women Writers, Body Image and Eating Disorders, Poverty and Microcredit, Males and Masculinity, Gender in American Culture, Hispanic Women's Writing, and Male and Female in Biblical Perspective. Special one-credit courses in film and social issues are also available through the Gender Studies Program.

Internship Opportunities

Students may earn credit through Gender Studies internships with local businesses or non-profit organizations.

Career Opportunities

Gender Studies education provides useful preparation for widely different careers in law, education, business, medicine and art.
