There's more to math than just addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In our complex world, a degree in mathematics will provide an invaluable edge: the ability to think clearly, find patterns, solve problems and communicate solutions effectively. These skills will help you reach your personal and professional goals, especially as our nation faces a shortage of scientists and mathematicians.

Faculty

Our dedicated faculty members are young, energetic and conduct highly interactive classes. Class sizes are small, enabling students to receive one-on-one instruction. Faculty members are working in a wide variety of pure and applied areas:

  • Michael G. Branton, Ph.D., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; dynamical systems, artificial life and computer graphics
  • Lisa O. Coulter, Ph.D., Courant Institute, New York University; numerical analysis and mathematical modeling
  • Hala A. El Aarag, Ph.D., University of Central Florida; computer networks, operating systems, modeling and simulation and performance evaluation (website)
  • Erich J. Friedman, Ph.D., Cornell University; probability, packing and tiling, combinatorial geometry and game theory
  • Margie Hale, Ph.D., Vanderbilt University; topology, geometry, logic, differential equations, interactive software (website)
  • William Wise Miles, Ph.D., Clemson University; computational analysis, finite element method, interface tracking and fluid dynamics
  • Daniel R. Plante, Ph.D., University of Notre Dame; web application development, security, and software development
  • Hari Pulapaka, Ph.D., University of Florida; graph theory, combinatorics and number theory
  • Thomas Keith Vogel, Ph.D., University of Central Florida; nonlinear waves, differential equations, dynamical systems, mathematical physics

Special Features

Math majors complete a year-long senior research project by choosing a topic of interest and conducting original mathematical research. Mathematics majors regularly present their work at conferences and Stetson University's Undergraduate Scholarship and Performance Day.

Course Information

Required mathematics courses include: two semesters of calculus, one semester of linear algebra, one semester of logic and proof, six math electives and a year-long senior research project.

Alumni Highlights

A variety of opportunities are open to Stetson mathematics majors upon graduation. Many earn advanced degrees in math, engineering and related fields. Others to go medical or law school, and some go directly to work in diverse areas. We have graduates working in business, government, universities and public schools. Careers for mathematics majors include statistics, actuarial science, operations research, consulting and cryptology.Recent outstanding graduates include:

  • Matt Deyo-Svendsen '07, graduate student at University of Minnesota
  • Adam Holers '07, MD program at Florida State University
  • Veronica Reott '06, engineer at Cordis Corp.
  • April Coates '06, mathematics teacher for Hillsborough County Schools
  • Nathan Crowder '06, analyst for GE MoneyClient Marketing in San Francisco Bay
  • Katie Spence '03, PhD student at University of Central Florida
  • David Hamrick '02, earned PhD from Boston University and is assistant professor at Rhodes College
  • Jennifer Czyprinski '01, statistician at Westat
  • Heather Garten '00, earned PhD from Emory University and is analyst at NSA.

Clubs and Organizations

Stetson University's Math Club, QED, is a student-run math club that also functions as the student chapter of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). In addition to sponsoring special events like guest speakers and celebrating Pi Day on March 14, the club has a puzzle solving group and provides tutoring.

Department Awards

The Ashcraft Award is a cash prize, named for a former chair of the department, and honors two outstanding juniors in the department.
