Vocal Pedagogy

Goals: to be able to identify materials in the Stetson libraries related to vocal pedagogy; to be able to research the periodical literature accessible through the library's subscription databases and to discover useful Websites about the topic.

Remember to ask lots of questions! This is a complex topic and will require effort to discover everything that is available on the topic.

I. Where to find Vocal Pedagogy materials in the Stetson libraries

note: the music collection is divided between the two libraries: note exact locations of materials

Webcat: (cat.stetson.edu) online catalog of holdings of duPont-Ball Library and Jenkins Music Library

Webcat User's Guide:

http://www2.stetson.edu/librray/using_webcat.pdf

Helpful hints from the Guide:

[note the term 'field' – to what does it refer?]

Words entered with a blank space between them will be searched in any order but in the same field. To search for an exact phrase, use the letters "adj" (for the word adjacent), without the quotation marks, between the words.

Example--Words or Phrase: presidential adj elections

You can type as much as you know of a name or word, and then use the dollar sign ($), the truncation symbol, to find all possible endings to the stem.

As you browse through the results, you should note the subject headings assigned to those books. In the complete record, you may click on anything underlined to link to other materials in that category.

Terminology:

pedagogy topics

identify terminology: pedagogy, teaching, instruction, methods, diction, phonetic alphabet, pronunciation, singing,

singing instruction and study, singing interpretation and phrasing, singing physiological aspects, voice, voice disorders, vocal cords, translation$ [note use of truncation character to include plural]

II. How to research periodical articles and materials held by other libraries:

A. Periodical titles (not specific articles) at Stetson

Webcat -- keyword search

B. Periodical articles online (some full-text)

terms to know: citation, abstract, full-text

Go to Library's main page and click on Databases...

http://www2.stetson.edu/library/databases.php

Questions to ask about databases:

Is the database subject specific?

Is it multidisciplinary?

What publication years are included?

Are abstracts and full-text included?

Are both basic and expert searches available?

Is there a help file for assistance?

Does the library have a guide for this database?

Questions to ask about articles retrieved:

Is the article peer-reviewed?

If it is not full-text, does Stetson own the periodical?

If Stetson doesn't own the periodical, how do you get it?

Examples of appropriate databases:
