 Nathan Wolek
 

Nathan Wolek, Assistant Professor of Music, is an audio artist and researcher whose work encompasses advanced signal processing techniques, multimedia performance, audio installation art, and electronic music history.

Wolek has presented research on a variety of topics at the SEAMUS, SMPC and ATMI national conferences.  In June 2006, he was invited to present at the Creative and Scientific Legacies of Iannis Xenakis Symposium in Ontario, Canada.  In November 2006, he was co-chair a panel discussion at the International Computer Music Conference entitled "The Laptop Ensemble as a Pedagogical Tool."

His software development includes VST plugins and Max/MSP externals that enable a variety of signal processing techniques.  In 2005, Cycling '74 released Hipno, a collection of over 40 plugins that Wolek co-developed with Electrotap.  Keyboard magazine recently called Hipno "just the antidote to sonic boredom that you need."

Wolek is the music director of the new media colletive MPG: mobile performance group, which was founded by video artist Matt Roberts.  MPG has been invited to perform recently at the Post-Industrial Carnival (Tampa, FL), Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival (Gainesville, FL), International Symposium of Electronic Arts (San Jose, CA) and ConFlux (Brooklyn, NY).

He is also pursuing a series of performance collaborations with Roberts entitled 'events', focusing on the themes of meditation and landscapes.  Their work has been presented at the Ybor Festival of the Moving Image (Tampa, FL), the New Forms Festival (Vancouver, BC) and the Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Art (Minneapolis, MN).

Wolek's audio installations have been featured as part of Sonic Circuits, New Music Marathon and Chicago MayFest events,  These multi-channel sonic enviornments explore spatial diffusion strategies and the relatinship between visitors and their location.

Nathan Wolek completed his Ph.D. in Music Technology at Northwestern University, and has studied with Gary Kendall, Amnon Wolman, and Virgil Moorefield.  He has taught previously at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Columbia College Chicago and Nortwestern University.  Wolek is currently Assistant Professor of Music Technology at Stetson University in DeLand, FL.
