  • Dorothy VanValkenburg Lewis , Columbus, Ga., celebrated her 100th birthday on March 13. She offers no secrets to her longevity, but adds, "I never wore a lot of makeup."

  • Edward C. Furlong, Jr. , DeLand, was selected as a 1998 Stetson distinguished alumni award winner in honor of 40 years as a faculty member.

  • Cartha D. "Deke" DeLoach , Hilton Head, S.C., wrote a book, Hoover. He was on the set at Universal Studios Fla. to help actor Ernest Borgnine with Hoover's speech and mannerisms.
  • Richard M. Feasel, DeLand, guest-conducted the Stetson Symphonic Band, performing his first composition, (1938), and his latest for Band, (1996) on Stetson Weekend 1998. The score also was performed by the Stetson Band for the American Bandmasters Association in Biloxi, Miss.
  • Leroy K. New, Carmel, Ind., was honored for 50 years as a member of The Florida Bar and The Indiana Bar.

  • Eleanor Holdeman Turnbull , Port Au Prince, Haiti, is the field director for the Baptist Haiti Mission, celebrating 50 years of missionary work.

  • Ruth Brooks Muir, Iowa City, Iowa, spent a month in Venice where she studied printmaking.

  • The Honorable Harry G. Hinckley, Jr., Fort Lauderdale, became a senior judge on June 30, 1998, as the oldest sitting judge in the 17th Judicial Circuit (Broward County).

  • Robert L. Perkins, DeLand, edited International Kierkegaard Commentary: Concluding Unscientific Postscript, a collection of previously unpublished articles published by Mercer University Press. His article, Climacan Politics: Person and Polis, is included in the volume.

  • William J. Roberts, Tallahassee, received the 1998 R. David Thomas Child Advocate of the Year Award from the Children's Home Society of Florida.
  • George H. Shriver, Statesboro, Ga., completed two major edited volumes. Now working on his tenth book, he received the Ruffin Cup at Georgia Southern — the most prestigious award given yearly to a member of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

  • Robert Edward Owens, Ellenton, retired May 31 after 38 years in the ministry.

  • Dodi Costine Lovett, Waynesville, N.C., an art major, opened a teaching studio last April. Dodi has works in both private and commercial collections throughout the United States.
  • Franklin Ritter, Tallahassee, is air quality and regional planning coordinator for the Department of Transportation.
  • Nancy Van Nus Slavik, Coral Springs, was honored at Teacher Appreciation Week for her contribution to educating the youth of America through the School Board of Broward County.
  • Lamar A. Willis, Athens, Ga., recently retired after 43 years in the music ministry. Vice president and president of the Georgia Baptist Church Music Conference, he sang with the Sons of Jubal for over 30 years.

  • Mervyn Altman, Sarasota, retired as a consultant in hospital support services. An active elder and choir member at First Presbyterian Church and volunteer in guest services at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, he sings with the Master Chorale in Tampa.
  • Sadie Arnette Chandler, Decherd, Tenn., director of teaching leadership in the Tennessee Department of Education, was a keynote speaker for the Xi State Delta Kappa Gamma annual convention at The University of the South, Sewanee. Tenn.
  • Mark C. Hollis, Lakeland, spoke at Florida Tech's Denius Student Center as a part of the Distinguished Lecturer Series managed by the Stetson School of Business Administration Board of Advisors.

  • Richard E. Layer , Alachua, along with Frank Siskovic Jr., Naples, and Frederick E. "Mac" Stones, Daytona Beach, who played for coach Dick Morland in 1955-56 and 1956-57, are the defending state Senior Olympics half-court basketball champions. The trio, known as Sunshine Beach, won the state crown in 1997 and advanced to the national quarterfinals.
  • Grady Snowden, Jr., Jacksonville, after completing 21 years as president/CEO of Wesley Woods on Julington Creek, is now project director, guiding the company in a $70 million expansion program.

  • Gail Pittman Coulter , Asheville, N.C., assistant pastor/minister at First Baptist Church of Asheveille, spoke at Stetson Weekend's chapel service.
  • Harvey L. Duke , Cary, N.C., retired after 27 years as a pastor and senior minister of the First Baptist Church of Cary, N.C., and 42 years as pastor in Southern Baptist churches.
  • Mel H. Gregory Jr., Atlanta, Ga., received a distinguished alumni award during the ‘S' Club dinner at Stetson Weekend.
  • Marvin L. McMaster , Apopka, is senior manager for Television Production for the Orange County Public School District in Orlando. Formerly a television production instructor at Cypress Creek High School in Orlando, he retired as senior audio/visual specialist at Martin Marietta Orlando Aerospace.
