Quotable

Associate Dean and Professor of Law Susan Rozelle.

Susan Rozelle

“If the Supreme Court decides to abolish the death penalty, Justice Breyer’s dissent in Glossip v. Gross could be read as the catalyst. This could be a milestone in the movement to abolish capital punishment. On Breyer’s list of everything wrong with capital punishment is the process of death qualifying jurors. Death qualifying jurors means you can’t serve on a jury in a capital case if you are unwilling to consider the death penalty. This sends a message to jurors that death is a proper punishment before they’ve even heard the case.”-Susan Rozelle, associate dean and professor of law, speaking on the Supreme Court’s recent Glossip v. Gross decision. Rozelle’s article, “The Principled Executioner: Capital Juries’ Bias and the Benefits of True Bifurcation,” was cited in the dissenting opinion in Glossip v. Gross.
