Professor Jason Bent

“Mounting evidence of a wide and growing income gap in the United States has dominated recent policy discussion. One fundamental question is whether labor and employment laws should be used to combat rising inequality and rebuild the middle class. That question will be the focus of the Stetson Law Review symposium. We have witnessed successful movements at the state and local level to increase minimum wages and leave time benefits; but we have also seen some states restrict collective bargaining rights and make employee organization more difficult. At this symposium, participants will explore the role of employment laws in the rising income gap, and consider whether employment law reforms could reverse the trend of increasing inequality. We will also explore some structural causes of inequality that may ultimately limit the effectiveness of any employment law reforms.”-Associate Professor of Law Jason Bent.
