See the message from RPPTL member, Attorney Jason Ellison below.

Attending the Florida Bar Real Property, Probate, and Trust Law (RPPTL) section’s executive council meeting is a good choice that shows you are focused on your future as a practicing attorney.  Attending this event is an excellent networking opportunity and may impact your legal career more than any legal course you can take!  Eight years ago I stood in your shoes, involved with the (then named) Real Property Law Association at Stetson, and was invited and attended a Florida Bar RPPTL section meeting.  Through my continued involvement with the RPPTL section, I have made legal connections throughout the State of Florida that has benefitted my legal practice, have joined forces with some of the “heavy hitters” in Real Estate (and Probate) law in drafting proposed legislation, and have even made a few friends along the way.  This event can be your gateway to these same things.  I recommend attending as much as you can, and to continue your involvement with your student RPPTL organization and the Florida Bar RPPTL section.

The event is Thursday through Sunday.  The major events, however, take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  I am happy to meet each of you in person as you arrive (schedule permitting).  Please provide me your cell number and the events you would like to attend, and I will try to coordinate our schedules.  Thursday (all day) and Friday (all day), each of the substantive committees meet to discuss current agenda items, proposed legislation, and new orders of business.  This is a must attend for a good flavor of what RPPTL is all about and really your best shot at networking.  Committee meetings are relatively small, involving anywhere between 10 and 40 attorneys.  As such, this is your time to rub elbows with some of the legal scholars and heavy hitters that practice in the area of law you are interested in!  I recommend attending 1-3 committee meetings on Thursday and the same on Friday.  I request that you tell me in advance which committee meetings you would like to visit, just so that I can let the Chair of the committee know how many students to expect.  (We also might be able to pair you up with an attorney that will attend the meeting and be a “mentor” with regard to the committee).  Thursday evening usually involves a cocktail hour with light appetizers.  It is generally well attended.  This cocktail hour, however, has a cost associated with it and requires registration.

Friday has more committee meetings.  Friday evening involves a dinner with the Executive Council.  This event, again a good networking opportunity as you have a captive audience (at your table), comes with a steep price.  Usually the event exceeds $100 per person.

Saturday – The RPPTL section is divided into two major groups.  Real Estate and Probate.  (a.k.a. – Dirt and Death).  The committees that met on Thursday & Friday propose positions, legislation, or any other matter to the group as a whole.  Saturday morning’s roundtables are the final step before it goes to the Executive Council.  This breakfast meeting gives you a synopsis of major issues that have bubbled up at each committee meeting.  If you would like to attend, please identify which of the two roundtables you would like to attend so I can get a head count.  NOTE:  Sometimes, the Roundtable meetings are held on FRIDAY afternoon.  Saturday morning / afternoon is the Executive Council meeting.  This meeting itself does not have a cost, however you should sign up for lunch and pay (if any) for lunch if you intend to eat.  If anything you discussed or heard at committee or roundtable made it through, it will be voted on at the Executive Council level.

Quite a bit of information to digest, but I hope you find it helpful.  I look forward to seeing each of you at this event and at future RPPTL events.  Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
