Putting Justice Back in our Criminal Punishment System: Looking Towards the Future

Jonathan Rapping is the Executive Director of the Southern Public Defender Training Center which is committed to supporting a generation of public defenders who are zealous and unwavering in their commitment to their clients.  As the Director of the Southern Public Defender Training Center, Mr. Rapping was spotlighted in the award winning HBO documentary Gideon’s Army.  He has previously served as the Training Director of Georgia’s new state-wide public defender system, where he was responsible for designing training programs for both legal and non-legal staff statewide.  He also served as the Chief of Training for the New Orleans Public Defenders as they rebuilt their office after the wake of Hurricane Katrina; and he was previously the Training Director for the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia.

Jonathan Rapping’s evening presentation will focus on the ideals of Gideon and how far we still are from realizing them.  He will talk about our obligation as attorneys to make this aspiration a reality and what the organization Gideon’s Promise is doing to make this a reality.  This talk will inspire you to think about your role in helping to reform the criminal punishment system.
