LEGAL PRO BONO OPPORTUNITY

Taylor Greenberg, an attorney at Bay Area Legal Services and a Stetson SJA alumni, is seeking law students to help with legal research for a Know Your Rights Project– a guide for teens in foster care. The guide was created in 2017 and was originally Taylor’s Directed Research Project when she was still a SJA student at Stetson. Today the Know Your Rights Guide is used by teens, attorneys, Guardian ad litem volunteers, and others in the child welfare community throughout Florida. The guide is currently being expanded into a website and app so that it is more readily available to youth statewide The purpose of the guide is to ensure teens know what their rights are in foster care and give them tools on what to do if their rights are being violated.

Taylor is in need of pro bono law students to assist in the following areas:

  • One or two law students to create a glossary of terms section. For instance- explaining the difference between a Guardian ad litem and an Attorney ad Litem, to define legal terms they may hear in court – shelter, dependency, termination of parental rights, and to explain common terms used within the child welfare system- Comprehensive Behavioral Health Assessment, 5339 forms, master trust accounts, etc.
  • One or two law students to help with adding recent law updates into the guide, specifically SB 80 and SB 96

Law students should have some background in dependency and strong research and writing skills.  If you are interested in this pro bono opportunity, please send a short paragraph on why you are interested in working on this project  and a writing sample to Attorney Greenberg at [email protected].  Deadline for applying is Friday, February 4th at 5 p.m.  But the earlier you apply, the better.
