Jamaican-American Bar Association Scholarship
The Jamaican-American Bar Association is inviting applicants for Scholarships to be awarded at their Annual Grand Gala and Awards Ceremony, on November 12, 2016, at the Westin Hotel, 400 Corporate Drive, in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Established to advance the professional interests of Jamaican American attorneys, JABA’s mission is to provide legal assistance to the Jamaican-American community in the United States and to coordinate educational, mentoring and other assistance for law students and new colleagues of the legal profession. Organized on a regional and de-centralized basis, with another vibrant Chapter in the New York / New Jersey area, JABA’s objective is to serve as a nationwide organization, operating throughout the USA.
The “Essay Moot” of their Scholarship Competition this year is “Immigration Reform is within the executive power of the President”. Recently, the Supreme Court split 4-4 in its June 23, 2016 decision, affirming a lower court’s ruling which stopped the President’s deferred action programs, known as DAPA. This had the effect of keeping millions of undocumented immigrants under the threat of deportation. We require a 500 word essay response to our Essay Moot, either agreeing or disagreeing with it. Students are advised that all essays must be submitted by email to firstname.lastname@example.org and must be received by October 17, 2016.
Together with JABA Scholarships, the Jamaican-American Bar Association is also awarding other Scholarships sponsored by local professional organizations. Consistent with our mission statement, all entrants are required to be Jamaican-American by birth or descent.
