DELAND, Fla., Oct. 7, 2013 – Stetson University joins a growing list of U.S. colleges and universities to enact a policy to prohibit smoking and tobacco-related products beginning Aug. 1, 2014. The policy will affect Stetson’s residential campuses in DeLand and at the College of Law in Gulfport.

The policy prohibits all forms of tobacco use including e-cigarettes and a variety of smokeless products on Stetson buildings, structures, grounds, parking lots and in university and personal vehicles while on Stetson grounds.

“I am proud that Stetson University residential campuses will be completely smoke- and tobacco-free next August,” said President Wendy B. Libby, Ph.D. “Stetson is committed to providing a safe and healthy living, learning and working environment for our students, faculty, staff, alumni and visitors.”

Stetson began implementing smoking restrictions in 2007 by banning smoking near buildings and air vents. The new policy is the result of several years of research, focus groups and a university task force that determined that smoking was inconsistent with the values of the university.

Stetson will offer a variety of resources to help members of the Stetson University community quit smoking, including a series of free education programs about smoking and free resources for those who want to quit, including cessation products and classes.

The university task force determined, “Our university commitment to health and wellness, one of our shared values, requires us to protect non-smokers but also to support smokers in reconsidering a behavior that has been scientifically proven to have serious long-term health consequences.”

Compliance with this new policy rests with all members of the Stetson community. Community members are empowered to respectfully inform others about the policy and the ongoing effort to enhance awareness of and encourage compliance with this policy. Violation of this regulation may result in corrective action under the Student Code of Conduct, Human Resources Policies and Procedures, or other applicable University Regulations or Policies. Visitors refusing to comply may be asked to leave campus.

Stetson will use the next 10 months to continue to educate the Stetson community and visitors about the new policy with a series of informational sessions, health fairs, human resource training sessions, student tours of campus, in marketing materials and on its website at stetson.edu/breathe-free.

Founded in 1883, Stetson University in Central Florida is an independent university that provides a transforming education in the liberal arts tradition. Stetson stresses academic excellence and community-engaged learning, and consistently earns high national rankings.
Most of us learned long before law school that setting goals and working to achieve them is important in life and career. That’s probably how you ended up in law school, right? So now what? Do we want great big ambitious goals, or meticulously crafted and detailed objectives with timelines and little rewards? Write them down or scrawl them on your bathroom mirror? We have answers to these questions and some ideas for making goals part of your strategy for success.

Lunch will be provided. RSVP through Symplicity by 5:30 p.m. on Friday, October 4, 2013.

The Fourth Annual Environmental Law and Justice Symposium will be held at FAMU College of Law on November 7-8, 2013. Co-sponsored with FAMU’s School of the Environment, this year’s symposium involves keynote lectures, panels, roundtable discussions, a book signing session, and an encore performance by Climbing PoeTree on issues of global, national, and local significance relating to this year’s symposium theme, “Empowering Environmental Justice Communities Locally and Globally.”

Below is an invitation letter to submit an article for the Fourth Annual Environmental Law and Justice Symposium issue of the Florida A&M Law Review. Articles are due on January 15, 2014. The symposium is interdisciplinary in its focus;therefore, articles addressing environmental justice issues from a non-legal perspective are welcome. Several authors have already committed to contribute to this symposium issue including Prof. Mary Wood (University of Oregon School of Law), Leslie Fields, Esq. (Sierra Club), Sid Ansbacher, Esq. (Gray Robinson), Jessica Scott, Esq. (EPA Office of General Counsel), Naysa Ahuja, Esq. (World Resources Institute), and Josie Balzac, Esq. (Wieland, Hilado & DeLattre). For any questions, please contact:

The student can choose to be available on a back-up basis in the event we have cancellations by other volunteers. If interested please go to www.bals.org and select “Give Help” then select “Volunteer” and then select the Law Student option. The Guardian ad Litem assures that the child’s wishes are heard and that the best interests of the child are heard and that the best interests of the child are presented to the court and agencies dealing with the child. Once trained as a Guardian, volunteers spend an average of 10 hours a month of their file. The training will cover 30 hours of non-legal pro bono hours, and any work you do as a Guardian will count towards your legal pro bono hours. For more information visit the website at: www.galtampa.org, or to attend the next training session please call Yvonne Marrone, Volunteer Recruiter at 813-307-3325 or Yvonne.Marrone@gal.fl.gov.
New-(2)Walk Like Madd October 4, 2013 17th Avenue Beach Park Registration 5:00pm ; Opening Ceremonies 6:00pm ; Run/Walk 6:30pm Why Does MADD Do a Walk? Because far too much work needs to be done to eliminate drunk driving, prevent underage drinking and serve victims. Did you know? • Last year, 10,839 people died in drunk-driving crashes – one every 50 minutes. • Every minute, one person is injured from an alcohol-related crash. • One in three people will be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lifetime. • MADD serves a victim or survivor of drunk driving every 9 minutes. • Teen alcohol use kills about 6000 people each year, more than all illegal drugs combined. • Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, and one out of three of those is alcohol related. Every step taken will help raise funds and awareness for MADD’s programs and services that will serve to keep our children and communities safe. We need your help: Are you more than 14 years of age and willing to volunteer your time to make the Pinellas/Indian Rocks Beach Walk Like MADD Walk a success?
(28) Sports Buddies – Big Brothers Big Sisters Ongoing Times and dates vary with your schedule Impact the life of a child while doing all the things you love: throwing a ball, enjoying a game or going fishing. Big Brothers Big Sisters creates one-to-one friendships between a child who needs a positive role model (Little) and a caring adult volunteer (Big). They share everyday activities – catching a fish for the first time or reading a book all the way through – which blossom into a relationship that expands the child’s horizons and helps them to make better decisions, improve their school work, and establish goals for themselves. Bigs provide the trust and openness necessary for Littles to build self-esteem, feel safe and respected, learn to believe in their own abilities, make healthy choices and gain control over things that happen to them. One person providing positive direction for a child has the power to measurably impact the direction of that child’s entire future. We currently have a growing waiting list of 200 children hoping to be matched with a Big Brother, Big Sister, or Big Couple for friendship and encouragement. Seventy percent of these kids are boys. If you are interested in volunteering as a “Big” we will match you with a child with similar interests, in a location that is convenient for you. In our Sports Buddies Program, you will serve as a friend and mentor to the little brother/sister who you are matched with. Spending time with your little brother or sister could include playing sports, fishing, attending a sporting event and/or anything that you and the little enjoy doing together. We often offer tickets to various sporting events to our Bigs for them to attend with their Little. Don’t like sports? We have kids on our waiting list who are bound to enjoy the same things you enjoy. Your relationship is based on spending positive one on one time together. You will take the child on a minimum of two outings per month, for 2-4 hours each time.
