Clinic and Externship events heading your way in September – SAVE THE DATES

September is full of opportunities for exploring more with the Clinical and Experiential Education Department – find out how you can get REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE.

On Wednesday, September 13, 2017, the Department will be cohosting (with Career Development) a State Attorney/Public Defender panel discussion at Noon in the Great Hall. The discussion features insights and stories from Bernie McCabe and Bob Dillinger, the State Attorney and Public Defender for the Sixth Circuit in Florida. Joining Mr. McCabe and Mr. Dillinger will be several former clinic participants to share how their experiences in the clinic setting provided them with the Real World Experience to allow them to hit the ground running in their careers.

Also cohosted with the Career Development Office is this year’s annual Judicial Clerkship Panel. The panel will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2017, at Noon in the Great Hall, and will cover everything from externship experiences behind the bench to post-graduate judicial clerkships.

Beginning on Monday, September 25, 2017 and extending through Friday, October 6, 2017, the Clinical and Experiential Education Department will offer wall-to-wall 9:00-5:00pm open office hours.  If you have a question about when you can participate, which externship or clinic is right for you, what your classroom experience will be like, or how Clinics and Externships can offer you “REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE” then stop by Director of Clinical and Experiential Education, Prof. Cerniglia, (203 Dana Administrative, or email at, or Assistant Director of Clinical and Experiential Education, Ryan Hoyle, at (206B Crummer Hall)  Prof. Cerniglia and Mr. Hoyle will be available on a first-come-first serve basis to meet with students. Students may also email to schedule specific appointment times.

Students are also invited to join the Clinical and Experiential Education Department on Tuesday, September 26, 2017, or Thursday, September 28, 2017, from Noon – 1:00pm in the Eleazer Courtroom for an exciting and informative open discussion of all things Experiential Education as part of our Lunch and Learn series.  Get up to speed on how experiential education “flips the classroom” by sending students out to a field placement to gain real world experience, then brings them into a classroom setting for roundtable discussions designed to reinforce each student’s professional learning goals and expectations. Please RSVP by September 21, to if you are able to attend, and specifying the date.

These events all lead up to Spring, 2018, registration. Registration will be held from October 6, 2017, – October 16, 2017.  To apply, students will need a resume, unofficial transcript, and brief personal statement as to the placement(s) of their choosing.  Students will also need to fill out our online application, found at: on all available clinic and externship opportunities is available at the Clinical Education website. From the website, students can review opportunities for placement, search our frequently asked questions, or locate the application database.
