BERETS (Grades K-3) - WEEK ONE

DEL- BER-101   LET'S INVENT!
Did you know that Leonardo DaVinci drew plans for the first helicopter?  Is the Mona Lisa a boy or a girl?  These are just some of topics we will learn about in our discovery of Leonardo DaVinci:  the scientist, inventor, and artist.  Students will explore the many exceptionalities of DaVinci and the many revolutionary inventions and major legacies he left behind.  So join us and we will express your ideas through science, art and invention.

HATS I (Grades 4-6) - WEEK ONE

DEL-101 FORENSIC SCIENCE - CSI: DELAND
What is Forensic Science? What evidence does an investigator utilize to solve a crime? Come and explore the science behind Fingerprinting, Footwear Analysis, Handwriting Analysis, Hair and Fiber Analysis, Blood Spatter Analysis, Tool Mark Examination, Profiling and Crime Scene Processing. Students in this session will also be working with latent print development. Join us for a spine-tingling week of Crime Scene Investigation. Let’s crack the case and Help Arrest The Suspects!

HATS II (Grades 6-9) - WEEK ONE 

DEL-201  MYSTIFYING MATH
Delve deep into fascinating mathematical concepts and solve even the most challenging problems using versatile strategies.  Explore how simple dots become extraordinary function relationships.  Use Arrays and Bar Models to tackle tantalizing puzzles. Develop formulas and discover patterns that are “mathmagical!”

HATS I & II  (Grades 4-9) - WEEK ONE

DEL-301  BLAST OFF!
Discover the fascinating world of rocketry this summer in an action-packed, fun-filled, hands-on program. Using the scientific investigative process, we will explore rocketry and Newton’s laws of motion. Be prepared to design and build your own balloon rockets, compressed air rockets, and water rockets. We’ll top off the week by building and launching model rockets. And when your friends ask, you can tell them, “Yes, as a matter of fact, it is rocket science!”

DEL-302  FLASH FICTION
This fiction writing seminar will explore the principles of good story telling, specific writing techniques including
moment-by-moment narration, dialogue, and description. Students will get a chance to create and share short fiction, and to get feedback from both peers and the instructor who is the author of the book Writing Extraordinary Essays.

DEL- BER-121  WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN! 
Calling all archaeologists!  Let's dig and discover the ancient civilization of Egypt.  Will you uncover how to make a mummy? What about a life sized sarcophagus?  We will also explore the pyramids and learn how to make tomb paintings and write in hieroglyphics.  You will become an official Egyptologist by the end of the week!

HATS I (Grades 4-6) - WEEK TWO

DEL-122  THE AMAZING RACE
Ready, Set, Go!  Take on our virtual version of the popular television show.  Enter as an individual or come with your team mate as we undergo the challenges of using clues given to get to the next location.  You will have to use all your mental skills as well as some physical skills to complete the race in just 5 days!  Don't forget there will be plenty of Speed Bumps, Detours and Road Blocks!

HATS I & II  (Grades 4-9) - WEEK TWO

DEL-321 HARRY POTTER SCIENCE MAGIC
Hop on the Hogwarts Express! Have you ever thought about being a student at a school similar to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? Then come immerse yourself in the fictional world of Harry Potter. Discover the magic as we explore the world of the famous wizard in classes such as Arithmancy, Astronomy, Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Divination, Herbology, History of Magic, Potions, and Transfiguration. Once students are sorted into their houses they will work together on cooperative learning projects and experiments, as well as earning house points. Aspiring witches, wizards and warlocks welcome. Leave the Muggle world behind and meet me at Platform 9 3/4. 

DEL-323 COMIC STRIP STUDIO
Whether you're a skilled artist or a consummate doodler, you, too, can become a cartoonist. All you need is your imagination. What's your favorite cartoon? Zits? Peanuts? Calvin and Hobbes? This course will introduce you to techniques used by professional cartoonists to bring characters and ideas to life on the Sunday comics’ page. We'll supply the materials and instruction, you'll supply the imagination. Taught by the creator of the Mr. Fitz comic strip, you'll enjoy a unique opportunity to learn cartooning from a professional cartoonist.

ORL – 101  PIRATE CREW
Ahoy Mates!   Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a pirate?  Join us as we go back in time and learn about famous pirates and what daily life was like.  Once you begin talking like a pirate you will create maps, rules and punishments for your own ship. You will then be prepared to defend your ship and country and see who will reign supreme and who will walk the plank.  Don’t delay – we set sail soon!

ORL – 102  JURASSIC CAMP
Welcome to the wondrous world of Paleontology!  Visit the past when dinosaurs roamed the planet and learn about the many species of dinosaurs and prehistoric life.  We will dig for fossils and experience erupting volcanoes as we learn about the factors that may have caused the extinction of dinosaurs.  We will also be comparing dinosaurs to their mythical brothers – the Dragons!

ORL – 103  THE MAGIC OF SCIENCE
Put on your black hats and learn about scientific secrets that create magical effects!  We will explore magnetism, physics, chemistry, inertia and more as we unwrap mysteries together. Join us as we explore logical and mathematical secrets and research the tricks behind the great magicians.

ORL – 104  TRAVEL THE GLOBE
Every country has something exciting to share!  Travel around the globe as we learn about different cultures and countries through their crafts, customs, games, music and food!  Some of our stops will be Japan, China, Australia, Africa and the Congo, and the Polynesian Island of Tahiti.  Pack you bags and get ready for an incredible journey!

ORL – 105  MEDIEVAL ENGLAND
Come one, come all!  Let’s step back in time to an age of knights and kings, lords and queens as we rule a kingdom set in the heart of Medieval England.  We will need to balance our kingdom’s budget to make sure the community is economically and fiscally secure, make critical decisions to guide our kingdom through troubling times, and create signed treaties to ensure domestic tranquility. Come join us and learn what life was like in these turbulent times. 

HATS II (Grades 6-9)

ORL – 202  IMAGINATION STATION
Do you have an active imagination?  Then join us as we learn about basic acting techniques, stage directions, theatre etiquette, character analysis, scene work and much more!  You will discover Popular Theatre – the use of theatre to raise awareness for social issues, and will be able to educate, inspire and empower your audience.  Let the show begin!

ORL – 203  ART-TO-FACTS
Magic, monsters, myth, masks, memorials, and man.  In Art-to-facts, we will craft cultural artifacts while exploring the meaning behind the mysteries of their makings through food, pottery, costumes, storytelling, and paint.  Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures –Beecher.  

HATS I & II  (Grades 4-9)

ORL – 301 EXPLORING TOURNAMENT CHESS
What do the March Hare, Cheshire Cat, and Alice have in common with a rook, a knight, or a pawn?  The answer is they each play a part in the exciting game of chess!  Explore the strategic side of tournament chess as you travel through the world of Alice and Wonderland.  Whether you are new to the game or truly a master, new adventures await you!
