WGS100C: Studies in Race, Class, Gender, & Sexuality
|
| |

Race, Class, Gender, & Sexuality is an interdisciplinary and global introduction to the major categories, themes, and concepts in research about women's and men's lives around the world. By watching a few films and reading various fictional and non-fictional works on the experiences of women and men across the globe, we will develop a critical framework for thinking about the complex ways in which gender intersects with other systems of power and domination, be it race, class, sexuality, religion, etc., in shaping women's and men's lives differently. Students will also have the opportunity to reflect upon and write about how these intersections have formed their identities and the individuals they are today. After laying out the grounds for understanding the meaning of gender, how gender relates to sexuality, and how the study of gender has changed throughout the last three decades, we will delve into controversial issues that pertain to the experiences of men and women in the US and the world today: gender stereotypes and fairy tales, advertising and the female body/ beauty standards, masculinity, men's bodies and health, the prevention of violence, globalization, human rights, and sex trafficking and sex work.
