SY101-01: Learning to Use Your Sociological Imagination: An Introduction to Sociology
|
| |

Students in this course will learn to use their sociological imaginations as they develop a new perspective on the social environments in which they live their lives. Family, education, religion, inequality, race, gender, ethnicity, deviance, crime, social change and many other elements of our social world will be examined using the critical perspective of sociology. Students completing this course will be able to use the sociological imagination they have acquired to better understand the society they live in and their place in it.
Your Professor
John K. Schorr came to Stetson after receiving his Ph.D. at Brown University. In addition to his love of teaching students how to “see” the world sociologically, he has devoted many years to the study of communities which have experienced disaster. He has written a book on the effect of a nuclear reactor accident on a community in Pennsylvania, and many articles on the impact of terrorism on communities, beginning with the Oklahoma City Bombing and most recently the 9/11 attacks in NYC and Washington, DC. He encourages all students to become actively involved in research and is the current director of the Stetson University Community-Based Research Program, helping students to work with community partners to investigate social problems such as homelessness, delinquency, poverty, and disaster recovery.
