RS101: An Introduction to Russian Studies
|
| |

Russia is a country of great contrasts. Thirty miles outside of modern European-style cities are villages out of the 19th century. Less than a mile from Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, one of the world's great showplaces of high culture, is the Lubyanka, the secret police headquarters where thousands met their deaths in the Great Terror. A country that is at once infatuated with and repulsed by the West, Russia has carved out a distinct position on the world stage. In this course, we use works of cultural history, literature, film, and politics to explore what it means to be Russian. Our journey begins in the late 18th century and ends with the Russia of Putin and his successors.
