Academic Rigor
Can ideas change the world? Yes,
if they are profoundly insightful and clearly articulated. During their
first-year of study at Stetson, students become immersed in an academic
tradition where intellectual discourse permeates their campus experience.
First Year Studies prepares
students for a life of debate and dialogue by fostering an appreciation for
questioning, examining, analyzing, interpreting ideas and writing. Through in-
and out-of-class conversations, first-year students join great minds in their
discussions so that their own minds might open and grow.
Through this rigorous exchange, we
are preparing students for a world that wants them to “think outside the box”
by first making them aware of what the “boxes” are and then giving them the
sharp minds to cut their way out.
It is very common for
students to be undecided about a major as they enter the University, or even
throughout their first few years here. The following site gives a brief
overview of the three Schools and Colleges at Stetson's DeLand campus, as well
as a few words about the Discovery program:

Sample Programs
The Pasta Series The Pasta
Series is a series of informal dinners hosted at the Center for First Year
Studies by a faculty member. Students who have expressed an interest in that
professor's academic area are invited to a dinner to discuss that major
further. Topics of discussion include typical coursework, sample classes, and
future applications of that area of study. Please contact the Center for
First Year Studies if you are interested in participating in this program.
Registration 101 Towards
the end of the Fall Semester, first year students will be given the
opportunity to register for Spring Semester courses. At Stetson University, we
use the BannerWeb system to register for classes. First Year Studies sponsors
a required program to teach students how to choose classes and build a
schedule, how to use the BannerWeb system to select and register for courses,
and general tips for the advising and registration process.
