 REL100: Understanding the Bible

Religious Artifact
Nearly a third of the world’s population claim allegiance to the teachings of Judaism and Christianity with the Bible as their sacred text. The Bible shapes both Jewish and Christian views of social justice and ethical responsibility. It also influences the personal views of those who have no ties to either religion. In American life, opposing forces have thumped its pages to support their view on issues ranging capital punishment, to evolution, and to the place of women in society. We will look to the historical, social, and religious forces behind the biblical text. We will discuss the role the Bible plays in our own world – from “Storms over Genesis” to Hollywood’s enactment of the last week of Jesus’ life. This seminar fulfills Stetson’s education requirement for a religious heritage course.
