PE190: Elections
|
| |

Elections are the central mechanism of democracy and are therefore one the key areas of study in political science. In this seminar we will take a broad look at voting and elections by examining electoral processes around the world. We will explore topics such as the various factors that influence turnout levels, the impact of political institutions on voting behavior and the nature of modern political campaigns. Because this seminar will take place within the context of the 2008 presidential election, we will place special emphasis on American elections and the ongoing presidential campaign. While much of the course will be based on the traditional classroom format, we will also visit the local elections office, conduct Election Day observational research and view campaign rallies and the presidential debates.
Your Professor
Dr. David Hill teaches a variety of courses in American politics, but his specialty is the study of elections and voting behavior. He has published several articles and a book on the factors influencing turnout in American elections, and he has also worked with students to develop and implement public opinion surveys during the last two presidential elections.
