PE105E: Thinking Politics and Values
|
| |

“Thinking Politics and Values” has a double meaning. The first is to become acquainted with how one studies politics philosophically, practically and empirically [evidence-based perspective]. The second is to refer to the thinking person; that is, to encourage adopting political perspectives and values from a reflective process rather than simply from tradition and what you have always believed. We will seek to move from behind the lens of ideological blinders. A constant questioning and critical thought process is the goal of the course. The values emphasis leads us to explore the meaning of justice and to discussing broad philosophical orientations including different brands of liberalism and conservatism [not all liberals or conservatives are alike]. We will study the different arguments pro and con of some of the hot-button social issues of the day such as gay rights, abortion and the interrelationship of religion and politics, the latter to include the issue of evolution and scientific education in schools.
