ES102: Principles of Microeconomics: The Case of Freakonomics
|
| |

When you purchase a bathing suit, do you exercise your rational decision-making skills, as explained by economists, or are you influenced by some other hidden, even 'freakish,' principle? In general, the more you eat, the less your satisfaction with each additional bite. Many restaurants do not hire African-American servers: is this because they are unqualified, overqualified, or is it something else? Do drug cartels follow sound economic principles, or are they an irrational anomaly of the economy? Was the drop in the US crime rate in this century caused by sound economic policies or by some other factor? Are people driven by incentives and self-interest, or are they driven to conform? Students in this course will analyze the principles of microeconomics, while simultaneously exploring the 'freakish' nature of the US economy. To enjoy this course, students must be willing to see the world in a novel manner.
Your Professor
Dr. Thaver received her PhD from Notre Dame. At Stetson she teaches a variety of courses on economics, poverty, freedom, and human values. She helped create the first university-based microcredit program in the world, founded on the principle that the poor are no less dynamic, entrepreneurial, and dignified, than the rich. Born in South Africa, Dr. Thaver sees the world upside-down and loves it. She urges her students to spend some of their learning-time seeing the world "upside-down."
