Active Engagement

The First Year Studies program is designed to create an experience where students are nurtured and guided to develop the skills, values, and behaviors that will allow them to realize their full potential as actively engaged scholars and as positive participants in and contributors to the social world

The process is geared toward encouraging students to develop self-reliance as well as a sense of connection between themselves and other students, values, faculty members, disciplines, ideas, career aspirations and a sense of identification with the University.

First Year Studies serves as a platform for:

• Developing a sense of community
• Identifying with the values and goals of the University
• Instilling the confidence and self-reliance necessary to progress into upper-division academic work

Sample Program

NightCap.

NightCap. is a series of Friday night programs designed to give students a place to hang out and be entertained every week, and to infuse the campus with a tradition of creative night and weekend experiences.

Stetson’s culture is a small community, where conversations over chai, laps around campus to discuss politics, and group trips to international cuisine restaurants are commonplace and treasured. This culture calls for small and consistent events that can cater to the requests of individual groups.

This is accomplished through consistent, unique and quality events every Friday night from 10pm – midnight. NightCap. activities are diverse, as they occur both indoors and outside, and include passive as well as active events. However, all events provide a social environment with food and entertainment. NightCap. also makes a point to co-sponsor many of the events, to spread the word about campus programming to more groups, and to assist smaller organizations with implementing a quality event.
