 BY190-02: Water Wars

Catfish image
Water is essential to all life on earth. Unfortunately many areas with high population densities have few water resources due to properties of water itself, local geology, and the global water cycle. Furthermore, water resources are frequently misused despite their integral role in local and global sustainability. High water demand combined with low water resources has caused social conflict in many areas, in some cases escalating into war. This course will examine water, its use, its misuse, and conflicts over it through readings, seminar discussions, and laboratory investigations, including some field trips. This seminar fulfills Stetson's general education requirement for a non-laboratory course in the natural sciences.

Your Professor
Dr. Work has worked and studied in areas of the country with drastically different water resources: the Great Lakes region, the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, Oklahoma, and Florida. She teaches Limnology (freshwater ecology), Conservation Biology, and introductory biology courses and she researches invertebrate and fish ecology in local lakes and springs. Much of this research has been conducted with students in the field at Blue Spring Park or local lakes.
