AY190: Deconstructing Difference: The Dialectics of Otherness

Otherness, a term that describes a dissimilar, unharmonious, or even exotic quality, has in recent years become the basis for a number of academic studies. Fundamentally, to be ‘other’ is to be different from the norm. In theological contexts, otherness has even been viewed as the basis for evil. In order to come to an understanding of what we as a society value, however, we must understand otherness. And it is only by deconstructing difference, by understanding what constitutes the ‘other’ and how it is defined by the in-group, that we can ultimately become a truly multicultural and diverse community. Deconstructing Difference: The Dialectics of Otherness promotes awareness and value of diverse peoples by deconstructing the concept of the ‘other’ and the role it plays in fostering fear and discrimination. We begin with an analysis of otherness in the Graeco-Roman world, and continue by examining how it functions in modern-day America. This seminar fulfills Stetson’s social science requirement.
