AS152C: The American 1950s and 1960s
|
| |

In this seminar we will learn and discuss the era that is, in a sense, the prelude to our own time. In the 1950s and 1960s, the attitudes and ideologies that have become second nature began to take shape--about what's public and what's private, about race and gender relations, about what to expect (and doubt) about our politics, and about America's global reach. With fresh interpretations of the period and experiences ranging from presentations from folks who lived in segregated DeLand to films, music, and games of the time, this course will give you the mental tools to learn about the almost present, so you can set your own course--for your personal, vocational, and political choices--in our time.
Your Professor
Paul Croce has been fascinated with this era since growing up in that time; then he added a scholar's knowledge of the period so he could combine in-depth knowledge with a sense of lived experience. He brings these active learning approaches to this and all his classes, since he is committed to treating learning as a chance for students to develop a road map for their own lives and as a resource for the community. He is active on campus as American Studies department chair and member of commitees for environmental awareness and community research, and journalists frequently call him to get his views of cultural and political trends.
